Holbeton WI book and other documents

Scanning day in Holbeton yields some real treasures

Here are a few pages from the beautiful handwritten book of the parish, made by the local Women's Institute in 1965. The extracts shown here note and count numbers of children in local families and local occupations, using fun and colourful drawings. There's also a collage page, showing samples of fabric which were in use at the time.

We understand that this 1965 record was part of a national WI Golden Jubilee project that year. If you have something similar for another place in the South Devon AONB we'd love to hear from you.

Mr Masters

Thank you too to Mr Masters who brought along some documents of his daily life. A school report (1949), his father's income tax bill (1945-56) and a receipt for wedding catering (1960) become the ephermera of the historic record.

Women's Institute

The Women's Institute continues to be an important part of community life across the AONB, for women of all ages.

The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
