Ten Estuary Tales

Estuaries across the South Devon AONB

From : Soundart Radio 102.5fm

If you love the coast, are fascinated by the wildlife of the riverbank or even partial to oysters then we think you'll enjoy Ten Estuary Tales. Each ten minute piece is a delightful glimpse into a rather hidden aspect of the watery world of the South Devon AONB.

The podcasts record some of the many individuals who live and work in and alongside these waters. Each one is told in a single voice. The bigger picture is provided by Nigel Mortimer, Estuaries Officer with the AONB unit.  Nigel works in partnership with people and organisations to encourage the sustainable use and enjoyment of estuaries.

Five estuaries

There are five estauries within the AONB landscape. These are the Dart, the Avon, the Erme, the Yealm and the Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuaries. Together they form part of the distinctive character of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ten Estuary Tales was commissioned by the South Devon AONB unit as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, to document and record community life, skills and heritage in the Area. The project is funded by the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group.

The recordings are collected, edited and produced by Lucinda Guy and colleagues at Soundart Radio 102.5fm, the licensed community radio station for Totnes and the surrounding villages.

The podcasts are being added here ovwer the coming weeks. You will also see a portrait of each speaker, taken on location by artist and photographer David Harbott for the AONB. His photograph, above right, shows Richard Marsh of Bigbury Bay Oysters, who features in the first podcast on shellfish farming.
